Is Blogging Better?

Quote:
Mrs. Davidson quoted, “Online blogs directed at peers exhibit fewer typographical and factual errors, less plagiarism, and generally better, more elegant and persuasive prose than classroom assignments by the same writers.” (Heffernen, August 7, 2011).

Reaction:
According to Mrs. Davidson, the author of "Now you See It" she suggests that students may show greater interest in blogging with their peers because the blogs show better prose and original ideas than paper assignments.  Is she correct?  I think this is a very reasonable suggestion.  Technology is increasing everyday and children as young as 3 are starting to use it.  Today's generation is more interested in technology than old fashioned ways of learning.  Today's generation is excited to use technology, therefore their blogs are in Mrs. Davidson's terms "exhibit fewer typographical and factual errors, less plagiarism, and generally better, more elegant and persuasive prose than classroom assignments."  Its time to bring more technology into classrooms to help flourish the creative minds of today's generation and the future's primarily technology based world.

  1. Katie,
Fantastic! You have the required elements in your blog! Your comments about hands-on activities, group work, and providing the technology tools to enhance creativity are all components of a 21st Century classroom.

  2. Katelyn,
I completely agree with your post. I used the same one in my post because I felt so strongly about it. Students need new ways to learn and technology is just the way for it to happen! Great profile by the way! :-)

  4. I am curious as to whether the students Mrs. Davidson refers to write as formally on social network sites like Facebook. I think it is important to teach students that there are situations best suited for using formal communication, and other times it is okay to communicate informally. The problem with informal communication is shortcuts are taken and the true meaning of a message might not be conveyed properly. Formal language is more specific, and students need to be taught the skills to be both specific and general, and the wisdom to know the difference.

  5. Blogging is a great way to keep students interested in the subject or idea. Children in every age should start working with technology. The quote you chose is a great example of what should be done. Research papers and blogs sound so much different. Though they are different, they could serve the same purpose. Great blog :)
