Wikapedia

a. What is Wikipedia?
-Its a multilingual, web-based encyclopedia project, that is ran by a nonprofit organization called Wikimedia Foundation.

b. How would you answer the question posed in this piece “How reliable can a source be when anyone can edit it?”
-I would say that its not reliable since anyone could edit it, your not sure where the person got the information.

c. Who do the creators of Wikipedia place their trust in when it comes to weeding out misinformation?
-They put it in the hands of the "wisdom of the crowd" to weed out the vandalism, which is not always the best idea. Most intellectuals don't condsider wikipedia a relible source.

d. Why did founder Larry Sanger leave Wikipedia?
-Larry Sanger left Wikipedia because he believed that wikipedia should give more authority to experts, so he left and created his own site.

e. What would abuse or vandalism look like on a Wikipedia page?
-Most likely it would look like obvious misleading information. It might have something very off topic on it or maybe something mean, like something that could obviously offend someone.

f. What do the statistics quoted in the third paragraph of this piece reveal?
-Statistics reveal that Wikipedia is among the top 10 most visited sites on the Internet around the world.

g. Why do you think Wikipedia is so successful?
-Right after the article mentions that they are the among the top 10 most visited sites, they say that its because its aided by the fact that Google searches typically list Wikipedia entries prominently on the results pages.

h. Why might Wikipedia’s creators not want to accept advertising?
-Wikipedia wants to be an unbiased source and by having advertisments all over the page, it sends a different message that information could be controled a certain way.

i. How does Wikiscanner help increase the reliability of Wikipedia entries?
-It helps because it scans the IP address of anonymous editors of the site to be easily checked which helps to find out if its credible.
